Book Writing 201 Session 1: From Idea to Proposal

Updated: Jan 27

ASSIGNMENT 1: Complete the tasks below. Answer the reflection question in the Comment Section below.

Your assignment for this session is to complete three specific tasks:

  1. Define Your Big Idea: Write one to two sentences describing the core idea of your book. What’s the main problem you want to solve or the question you want to answer?

  2. List Your Expertise: Write down at least three things that make you uniquely qualified to write this book. Examples: Your job, your lived experiences, research you’ve conducted, or content you’ve already created.

  3. Create a Rough Outline: Think about 3–5 major topics or sections your book might cover. Write them down. Don’t worry about getting it perfect—this is just a starting point.

REFLECTION QUESTION:

What is the general topic or theme for your book—broad enough to protect your idea but specific enough to show your direction. Example:

  • "My book will focus on supporting school leaders in creating inclusive classrooms."

  • "I’m working on a resource for first-time managers to navigate workplace challenges."

My book is Christian based, it talks about a kid who grew up as a believer in Christ Jesus. His single parent mother taught him the Bible. You can see as he goes to school that he learned how to operate as a powerful Christian well. He deals with being bullied, as well as other oppositions from a biblical standpoint. He encourages other kids to do the same.

The general topic of my book is that love can be toxic. I'm writing an urban fantasy, and I wish to showcase how childhood trauma can lead people to accept love bombing and even controlling characteristics, so long as they feel loved.
